At Moshi Kids Centre, we often say that a child cannot learn on an empty stomach. While our mission is centered on education and providing a safe space for the underprivileged children of Kilimanjaro, we know that the “key to life” isn’t just a textbook it’s a healthy meal.
For many of the children we serve in the Pasua area and beyond, the breakfast or lunch they receive at our centre isn’t just a snack; it is often the most nutritious meal they will eat all day.
The Science of a Full Stomach
Research shows that nutrition and brain development are inseparable. When a child suffers from food insecurity, their focus shifts from the chalkboard to their hunger. Chronic hunger leads to:
Reduced Concentration: It’s impossible to solve a math problem when your body is signaling for fuel.
Weakened Immunity: Malnourished children fall ill more often, leading to missed school days.
Stunted Growth: Proper vitamins and proteins are essential for the physical development of kids under the age of ten.
By providing consistent, healthy meals, we aren’t just filling bellies—we are fueling potential.
What’s on the Plate?
Our nutritional program focuses on local, sustainable, and energy-dense foods that reflect the Tanzanian diet while ensuring a balance of nutrients. From uji (nutritious porridge) in the mornings to hearty lunches of beans, rice, and vegetables, we ensure our students get the protein and vitamins they need to stay active in the classroom and on the playground.
A Safe Space to Grow
Nutrition is also a key part of our “Safe Space” promise. At Moshi Kids Centre, mealtime is a community event. It is a time for our children to sit together, feel cared for, and know that their basic needs are met. This sense of security reduces stress and allows their minds to open up to creativity and learning.
How You Can Help Fuel a Dream
Providing daily meals for hundreds of children is a massive undertaking. While we have improved the lives of over 800 children so far, our ability to keep the kitchen running depends on the generosity of our global community.
When you Sponsor a Child or make a donation to the centre, you aren’t just buying books or paying for teachers. You are:
Providing fresh, local produce for our kitchen.
Ensuring every child starts their day with a warm, nutritious meal.
Supporting the health of the next generation of Kilimanjaro’s leaders.
Education starts with nutrition. Thank you for helping us ensure that no child in our care has to choose between their hunger and their future.
