For underprivileged children in Moshi and across Tanzania, a single classroom can unlock a lifetime of possibility. Here’s why education changes everything — and how you can help make it happen.

aIn the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, thousands of children wake up every morning facing a choice that no child should ever have to make — go to school, or help the family survive. At Moshi Kids Centre, we have seen firsthand how a single classroom, a caring teacher, and a consistent meal can completely transform what a child believes is possible for their future.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. The Real Cost of Missing School in Tanzania
For many families in Tanzania, education is not free in practice. While public primary school fees were officially abolished, the hidden costs — uniforms, exercise books, examination fees, and transport — remain out of reach for millions of families living on less than $2 a day. When money runs out, it is almost always the children who pay the price, missing school for days, weeks, or permanently.
Girls are disproportionately affected. When families must choose which child to educate, cultural pressures often push girls out of school first — and the consequences follow them for life. A girl who completes secondary education earns, on average, 25% more over her lifetime than one who does not, and is far more likely to delay early marriage, raise healthier children, and participate in community decision-making.
Did you know? According to UNICEF, Tanzania has one of the highest rates of primary school dropout in East Africa. Over 30% of children who enrol in primary school never complete it — not because they lack ambition, but because poverty intervenes.
Why Education Is More Than Just Books and Lessons
At Moshi Kids Centre, we have learned that education means far more than what happens inside a classroom. For the children we support — many from families of daily-wage workers, orphaned children, or those in exploitative situations — school is a safe space, a source of nutrition, a community, and a reason to believe the future holds more than their circumstances suggest.
When a child comes to our centre, they do not just receive lessons. They receive a hot meal, consistent care, access to recreational activities, and the quiet but transformative message that their life matters and their potential is real. Many of the children we work with arrive withdrawn and uncertain. Within months, they are confident, curious, and asking what they can become.

What Happens When a Child Stays in School
The evidence is overwhelming. Every additional year of schooling increases an individual’s earnings by an average of 8–10%, according to the World Bank. But the impact reaches far beyond income. Educated children grow into adults who are more likely to seek healthcare, less likely to experience or perpetuate domestic violence, and far more capable of participating in their community’s governance and economy.
In Tanzania specifically, communities with higher rates of school completion show lower rates of child marriage, lower infant mortality, and greater agricultural productivity. Education is not just a gift to an individual child — it is an investment in the health and resilience of an entire community.
What Education Unlocks for a Child in Tanzania
- Higher lifetime earnings and financial independence
- Better access to healthcare and health knowledge
- Lower risk of early marriage for girls
- Stronger civic participation and community leadership
- Ability to support and educate the next generation
- Reduced vulnerability to exploitation and trafficking
How You Can Help Give the Gift of Education Today
You do not need to travel to Moshi to make a difference. Every donation to Moshi Kids Centre goes directly towards keeping a child in school, feeding a hungry learner, and building the safe spaces where futures are formed. Here is what your support looks like in practice:
A donation of $30 covers a month of school supplies for one child. $50 provides a full term of daily nutritious meals. $100 pays for a child’s complete school uniform, books, and enrolment fees for an entire year. And a monthly gift of any amount allows us to plan ahead, retain committed staff, and respond to the children who need us most urgently.
Beyond money, we also welcome volunteers — particularly those with skills in teaching, healthcare, construction, and community development. Our helpline in Pasua, Kilimanjaro is always open for those who want to engage more directly.
Give the Gift of Education — Starting Today
Every child at Moshi Kids Centre deserves to learn, grow, and dream without limits. Your donation — no matter the size — puts a book in a child’s hands and hope in their heart.
